While the prospect of smartphone wallets is exciting, the DMV emphasizes the importance of holding onto physical IDs for now. Law enforcement hasn’t fully adopted IDs yet so bars and restaurants may still ask for IDs. During this transition phase people will need to carry both digital IDs until mobile IDs become widely accepted.

 

Illinois Joins the Mobile ID Movement

Illinois is not far behind in the smartphone wallet revolution. The recent enactment of a law, in the state permits individuals to use IDs beginning on January 1 2025. This decision is in line with the states objective to update identification procedures and make life easier, for its residents.

State Senator Michael E. Hastings underscores the advantages of IDs stressing their capacity to safeguard details by allowing selective sharing. “Mobile drivers licenses and ID cards offer our residents the choice to safeguard their information ” he clarifies.
