In a bizarre discovery, a web security researcher has found that typing a specific sequence of just four characters can cause an iPhone crash, rendering the device’s user interface unresponsive. Konstantin, the researcher, on Mastodon came across a bug and advised iPhone users to be careful when inputting text, on their devices.

The iPhone crash sequence consists of two quotation marks followed by two colons: “”::. When you type this set of characters into the search bar of the Settings App or the App Library it can unexpectedly lead to a system issue where the iPhones Springboard (the interface you interact with) crashes and your screen goes dark.

 

The Mysterious iPhone Crash Code

According to Techcrunch, the iPhone crash occurs when the specific character sequence is typed into the search bars mentioned above. The screen of the device will go dark show the iPhone loading screen and then return to a home screen. This occurrence has been verified by the professionals at PCMag, who were able to recreate the problem, on their devices.

Interestingly, the iPhone crash can also be triggered by typing the sequence followed by any other character, making it a highly sensitive bug. Although this bug might cause concern iOS security expert Ryan Stortz has looked into the problem. Concluded that it doesn’t seem to pose a security risk.
