Tesla Expands Weather Radar to More Vehicles in Major Update

But what Tesla is finding is it’s breaking new ground in vehicular weather monitoring by extending its sophisticated Weather Radar functionality to a wider cross section of its fleet. For vehicles with Intel processors, Tesla has tuned their Weather Radar to work, which is a big stride in weather tracking for Tesla vehicles.

The expansion hits as part of the 2024 Holiday Update, first released with limitations that limited the Weather Radar feature to vehicles powered by more advanced AMD Ryzen processors. But Tesla’s engineering team has cracked the code when it comes to optimization, as Intel-powered Model 3 and Model Y vehicles now have access to this essential weather monitoring tool through the software update 2024.44.25.3.

Why This Weather Update Matters More Than You Think

Weather Radar functionality is more than just another feature addition. This shows that Tesla is continuing to push its focus on improving the driving experience for all of its entire fleet*, whether it be what hardware is installed. This Weather Radar system provides drivers with a state of the art precipitation overlay that displays weather patterns and storm movement in the previous three hours, giving unprecedented weather awareness for any day drive or long distance travel.

Previously, Intel equipped vehicles could only use the basic Weather at Destination feature, but can now use all Weather Radar capabilities. This features an animated overlay, which allows the driver to see weather patterns with the same detail as their AMD equipped counterparts.

Getting Technical With Tesla’s Weather Features

Also, the Weather Radar interface is nicely integrated in the vehicle’s display system, with the icon to activate it placed next to the Superchargers icon at the far right of the screen. This location places it conveniently from the far end of the interior where it is easy to reach but remains branded as Tesla with its open, clean feel of their user interface. Drivers can zoom and pan different areas to watch weather conditions on their route and the system provides flexible viewing options.

The most noticeable aspect of the Weather Radar is it being able to give dynamic weather visualization while the vehicle is in motion. Nevertheless, smart decisions have been made by Tesla as they determine the Points of Interest (POIs) we see hidden when the precipitation overlay activates to maintain things concise but maintain valuable charging location information.

The Premium Experience

However, it’s important to know that the only vehicles eligible for the Weather Radar feature are the ones with Premium Connectivity subscriptions. The cant of the requirement is to ensure that the stream of data throughout will remain constant as it does for real time weather updates, and surprisingly vehicles that connect to Wi Fi hotspots also need to subscribe to this requirement regardless.

Tesla’s focus on supporting older hardware is a great sign for vehicle software development in general. Many manufacturers look to improve their hardware capabilities but Tesla is a company that continues to think differently and ways to bring advanced features to all parts of their fleet at a fraction of the cost and value proposition for all Tesla owners.

Looking Ahead: Tesla’s Continuous Innovation

This is an expansion of Tesla’s ongoing commitment to enhancing the ownership experience across their entire fleet, enabling the Weather Radar feature it to expand from iPad to Intel-based vehicles. They also hint at future feature expansions possible with the company’s ability to optimise complex features for less powerful hardware, for example, with the likes of the new Parked screen and improved Autopilot visualizations for features outside North America.

Being able to ship and deploy this feature to Intel vehicles is a major technical achievement and a good baseline for upcoming feature optimizations. It proves Tesla keeps its kids on the bus and is prepared to keep its customers on board for as long as possible to innovate with software and support its entire user base regardless of their car’s hardware configuration.

This represents the launch of the expanded Weather Radar functionality, a mark of software-first vehicle development and Tesla’s unwavering investment in ensuring every vehicle continues to rapidly improve. With climate change ever-increasingly impacting the receptibility of weather conditions, real time weather radar information right in the car is no longer just a convenience, but a key safety feature for all Tesla drivers.
