OpenAI CEO Dismisses GPT-5 Orion Rumors as “Fake News”
Artificial intelligence space has been awash with mouth-watering rumors and speculations on a new frontier model by OpenAI known as GPT-5 Orion. Yet today, the company’s CEO, Sam Altman, has been active on social media specifically, refuting these rumors, calling the recent report by The Verge “fake news out of control”.
Two journalists, namely Kylie Robison and Tom Warren, released a report in which they predicted the following: OpenAI is preparing to release GPT-5 Orion by December. The article described in detail the release plans of the model and its emphasis on the business audience after its launch was announced; access to it would be available only through an API.
OpenAI CEO’s Cryptic Response
Robison posted the article in question on his page and two hours after that Sam Altman responded in X, where he replied to the published article. Such was his message, in a tweet where he wrote only “fake news out of control,” people remain uncertain about the GPT-5 Orion.
What is missing in Altman’s response is a flat out dismissal of all the allegations that were presented in the article. He didn’t say it in black and white that the information was false or which part of the detailed report was incorrect. This has created speculation of the presence and advancement of GPT-5 Orion in the market in future.
Conflicting Reports and Speculation
This is not the first time the existence of this frontier model is on the spotlight, and all thanks to The Verge’s report on GPT-5 Orion. Previous coverage in outlets such as The Information has also exposed reports that OpenAI has been developing another project in-house dubbed as the Orion project. To the present, OpenAI has not refuted these claims.
The absence of a flat out denial from Altman has left many in the AI community scratching their heads about the fate of GPT-5 Orion. Is the model actually in the development process or is it just the circulating urban legends?
OpenAI’s Recent Releases and Competition
The last time that OpenAI launched a new frontier model, the o1 preview and o1-mini iteration, was at the beginning of September. But the response to these LLMs has been lukewarm because of their expensive operating costs as well as constraints relative to the company’s GPT family products.
While that was the case, competitor such as Anthropic has been advancing within the field of AI. This week on its blog, Anthropic introduced a promising new agentic mode of use called ‘Computer use’ and a new version of its Claude line of LLMs. This development has put pressure in OpenAI since they need to continue to stay as the leading players in the AI industry.
The Future of GPT-5 Orion
Of course, this has not deterred the AI community from wanting to know more of GPT-5 Orion and what it is capable of. If the model is actually in development, it will be a new membership to artificial intelligence and put OpenAI again on the map.
But until we get closer to the launch of GPT-5 Orion and hear more clear information about it from OpenAI, the fans of the company and its models should not get too exited. It’s still unpredictable whether this rumored frontier model will be released, and when it will happen.
Final Thought
The recent controversy built around GPT-5 Orion shows how the advanced innovations and theAccordion to some extentsGAI’s work turn into new focal points of shocking and curiosity. So, every time a story such as the one about OpenAI and Tesla becomes accepted news, it should be taken with a pinch of salt.
Nonetheless, as interesting as it is to look at OpenAI promising a new frontier model, we should not jump the gun and get the information from the official sources. However, the AI community will undoubtedly keep a close eye on everything related to GPT-5 Orion and AI’s potential future in the meantime.
